We have seen our fair share of beautiful sunsets around the world. In fact it’s one of our favorite things to do when we’re visiting a new place. Sunsets are magical and a reminder that no matter how much you think went wrong that day, it can still end beautifully. These are 7 of our favorite sunsets in South America.
//USHUAIA, ARGENTINA//
Ushuaia is such a unique place. Everything about this city is beautiful, but perhaps the thing that stuck with us the most were the sunsets. They were out of this world, stunning. Hues of red, orange and yellow burnt up the sky. It was vibrant and colorful. The best place to watch it set is from the water. You’ll watch the city light up in front of the snow-capped mountains.
//RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL//
Perhaps one of the most famous sunset locations in all of South America. There is only one way to describe Arpoador, magical. This is definitely not a secret spot, locals and tourists alike, flock here by the masses to watch Rio light up and await as the city comes to life! It’s a great place to grab a few beers, sit back and enjoy as the sound of music and laughter fill the air.
//TORRES DEL PAINE, PATAGONIA, CHILE//
Although, not notorious for its sunsets, Refugio Las Torres can put on quite a show. This will likely be either your first or last night in the National Park and what a way to either start or end your journey. This sunset is hands down in our top three best sunsets we’ve ever witnessed during our travels. Apart from the colors that invade the sky, there is an emotional element at play when to experiencing this sunset. The mountain filled backdrop, and Las Torres peaking through the clouds as the sun and light dance around, is a sight everyone should witness at least once in life.
//SALAR DE UYUNI, BOLIVIA//
Salar De Uyuni located in eastern Bolivia has quickly become a traveler hotspot in South America , and for a good reason. The entire visit to the Salar feels like you’ve landed on another planet. It was the end of the our first day in the slat flats. We stop the car and watched as the colors quickly engulfed every inch of the Salar. It light up the sky and reflected on the salt underneath us. It was like being inside of the sunset.
//TAQUILE ISLAND, PERU //
Taquile is a popular stopover when booking a Uros island experience from Puno, Cusco. However, few actually spend beyond a few hours or night on this calm and charming island. After the tours leave, the island comes to life with the locals going about their business as they have been for the past couple of decades, not much has changed. At the center of the island, lies an ancient Mayan ruin that you can visit (completely) tourist free and watch as the sun dip behind the clouds. You truly feel like you stepped back in time.
//LARCOMAR, LIMA, PERU//
This sunset will go down in history, perhaps because it was our last day in South America or because it marked the end of our first year of full time travel. There was something extraordinary about this sunset. Sitting oceanside at Tanta restaurants, thinking about all that we had seen and experienced was humbling and emotional. Larcomar in Lima is a fantastic place to enjoy a cocktail and watch the Pacific Ocean comes to life, as the sun dips behind the horizon.
//MORRO DO PAI INACIO, CHAPADA DIAMANTINA, BRAZIL//
Located about 8 hours via bus from Salvador, Chapada Diamantina lies at the base of Lencois an old diamond mining village. There is so much to do and see in the national park, among them is watching the sunset on the Morro Do Pai Inacio. It’s easily accessible, and busy but completely worth a visit.
